Clean & Jerk

 

The Clean and Jerk is known as the King of Lifts.  This competitive lift is broken down into two separate stages.  The first stage is called the CLEAN.  The clean is done by lifting the barbell from the floor to a final resting position across the anterior deltoids (the front of the shoulders) and clavicles (collarbones).  The pulling portion of the clean is a very rapid movement, with the bar normally placed on the shoulders in less than 1 second. 

After you have successfully cleaned the barbell, the next movement moves the barbell overhead  - what is known as the "JERK".  The jerk portion of this lift is broken down into the following sequence >> dip-drive-press.

This multi-joint lift gains most of its impetus from the strength and power of the lower body.  The arms and shoulders only push the body under the rising bar and hold it in the final position.

  • Clean
  • Power clean
  • Hang clean
  • High clean high pull
  • Low clean high pull
  • Push press
  • Push jerk
  • Split jerk
